A Great Gardens Begins with a Plan

Gardening begins in winter with a plan. A good garden plan will allow you to select the right plants for your garden, create a stunning layout, and ensure your plants thrive. Here are five of our best tips to plan an amazing garden:

  • Measure your space. Beautiful garden beds look lush and full but not crowded. Measuring your space and selecting hostas and other plants that will fit well at their mature size is key. You want your plants to brush shoulders but not fight for space.
  • Think about texture. Choose plants with various textures (like the photo below) to add interest to your garden. Our new hostas offer various textures with narrow, wavy leaves like Yippee and large rugose leaves like Midnight Oil.
  • Improve your soil. Beautiful plants start with good soil. Hostas aren't picky, but they thrive in loose soil that's rich in organic matter. Adding organic matter like mulch and compost to the soil in the winter and early spring is a great way to get a head start.
  • Think about layers. Plants with varying heights will add depth and interest to your garden. We like to pair hostas with low growing plants like Creeping Jenny, taller plants like astilbes, and stately shrubs like azaleas.
  • Observe your space and choose a design that suits it. How much light does your garden get? Is your home a farmhouse or a modern build? Your existing landscape will influence what design works well for your garden.
